Promoting responsibility

Radio Commentary

It’s easy to tell students “just say no,” when confronted by peer pressure to do something bad.
But the reality is that it’s not always effective.
It’s much harder, but works better in the long run, to help young people develop a sense of personal responsibility that will allow them to take the right stand when they are faced with challenges.
Here are some tips that have proven to help in the past:
Forbid young people to put others down or use profanity in your presence.
Teach young people how to solve conflicts peacefully.
Look for examples of effective conflict resolution in history, current events, and in literature.
Point out examples of good and bad sportsmanship among famous athletes.
Talk about why good sportsmanship is the better route.
Model appropriate conduct for your children. Tell young people about a time you had to accept the consequences of an action you took.
All these actions can be very effective.
