Santa Barbara County Education Office promotes 2nd Annual Hour of Code

News release

In collaboration with the Santa Barbara County Education Office, all 20 school districts in Santa Barbara County have signed up to participate in the 2nd Annual Hour of Code during the week of Dec. 8 to Dec. 14. The Hour of Code is a global event involving millions of students in over 180 countries.

The Hour of Code was created by Code.org as part of their efforts to promote computer science education. Self-guided tours are available at http://code.org/learn. Students and teachers can implement the tutorial without much background in computer science or coding. Celebrities from Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai to President Obama are participating in this campaign to get younger and more diverse students interested in the growing field of computer science. There are now more jobs in this sector than in all of the other STEM fields combined.

Information on how your school or family can participate, along with supporting resources and videos, can be found at http://hourofcode.com/us, or by contacting David Bernier, Coordinator of Instructional Support and Technology Integration at the Santa Barbara County Education Office at dbernier@sbceo.org or 964-4710, ext. 5348.
