In
1955, the state of California set a goal of providing access to higher
education for low and middle-income students.
That
goal was enhanced with the passage of funding for Cal Grants — cash awards for
college aid.
March 2 is the deadline for students to apply for Cal Grant scholarships
to use next year. The process is lengthy, so it is good to start early.
Here are
the details:
• The Cal Grant A
program provides up to $5,970 at California State University sites or up to
$12,192 at University of California campuses, or up to $9,223 a year in tuition
assistance at a private college for qualified
students.
• A high school senior must
have an overall B or 3.0 grade point average and a family income of less than
specified amounts: about $74,700 for a family of two, to $96,100 for a family
of six or more. Community college transfer students can qualify with a grade
point average of 2.4.
• Cal Grant B awards, for students with a
2.0 or better GPA, provide up to $1,500 for books and living expenses for the
first year at a community college or tuition at a CSU. The second year, Grant B
awards also help pay for tuition and fees at four-year colleges.
